  • `Titty fruit`( Solanum mammosum )

Has anyone had any success growing Solanum mammosum ( titty fruit ), there grown for the fruit..., just you cant eat it its poisonous, but put it in the fruit bit anyway!

I planted 10 seeds last june, and all died apart from one that grew vey slowly, in november i put it in a 1L pot, it stayed in a 1 litre pot untill february when i put it into a flower bucket, now its shot up to about 3 1/2 foot tall and is all bushy with loads of side shoots, the oldest shoots are turning to wood instead of soft green growth

Im just wondering if im likely to get flowers/fruit over here , its in the house under growlights, but im wondering if it would survive outside , i got no growing instructions with the seeds!

Did you use a heated propagator? Link says they need 22-25C to germinate

They germinated quickly, but stayed small after that, growing in rootmaster cubes, the cubes are like a sponge made from coir, i had them in the rootmaster trays in a heated proergator at about 27C Air temp as i was germinating lots of citrus in the same propergator

they were growing fine, a month or so later i moved them up to 3 inch pots,on a heater mat, under growlights, roots at about 20-25C after a couple of weeks, the roots got to the point were they were coming out of the bottom slightly, after another month or so they looked fine but still about 6 - 10 inch high ,then one day all the leaves sudenly started getting spots, over 2 days, went brown/grey semi transparent slimy blotches all over and they wilted and died, it looked like tomato blight to me, at the same time i lost about 30 citrus seedlings in the propergator the others had been in at the same time, when i pulled them out of the pots there were tiny white worms in the citrus pots, hundreds of them, i never checked the tittyfruit, i just binned them

The one that suuvived was in the same place but was not touching the others, it was about 2 foot away as it wouldnt fit on the end of the heater mat it was in the center, the others were all touching leaves slightly

It has never flowred, it just keeps making sideshoots, getting wider and taller

I would guess: they were over-watered, which led to the rotting, and also provided a perfect warm, wet condition for infestation by fungus gnat larvae to eat the roots.

I can't help you I'm afraid but I had to post and say that I love these! However, we don't know them as 'titty fruit' we call them 'Pig Faces!'

I saw them for sale when i was buying some harder to get citrus seeds from tradewinds and i just had to buy them, its so funny in the pictures, ive just got no Titty Fruit/ Cow's Udder/ Apple of Sodom /Solanum mammosum , fruits , its when you see them listed as 3 to 5 inch long that makes you laugh more

Nipple Fruit, Titty Fruit - Solanum mammosum

Not as funny as the chilli pepper plant i bought last year, still growing, still no fruit on that either, chillies on all other chillies, but none on this one, i found a plant on ebay last year, going to get some seeds this year

I've seen those strange yellow fruits in Chinese New Year flower arrangements...never knew the name - didn't consider them a rudey fruit. On the other hand.....those chillies Hahahahahaha How does something like that happen in nature? Needs a 18 and over rating!
